Socks For Men
Have you ever thought about how boring socks for men are? I guess it is part of the trend in men’s fashion in general. Clothing for men has always been less interesting than clothing for women. Men’s shirts are in duller colors with less patterns on them. Men’s shoes are less flashy and more practical. And while women can wear dresses to express any mood and suit any occasion, men’s suits are all pretty much the same.
But as dull as men’s clothes are in general, socks for men are abysmal. Whether they are athletic socks, gold toe socks, or smart wool socks, socks for men almost always lack any but the most sedate pattern or color. Women’s socks can have bright flowers on them. They can have rainbows, stars, fish, or dancing midgets. Socks for women can fit almost any need. But socks for men are universally plain. They are almost always in one single color, and that color is almost always black, brown, white, or gray. If mens socks do have a second color on them, it is usually a similar color. Perhaps it will be blue-gray against a black background, or mustard against red clay. Whatever the color scheme, you can be sure that the socks for men will be dull, drab, and awful.
I see no reason at all why socks for men should be this way. After all, mens boots have gotten more interesting, mens shirts have gotten more colorful, and men’s hats have always displayed a world of variety. Why then should not men’s tube socks advance in the same way.
I know many people who are so disappointed by the situation with socks for men that they’ve taken to knitting their own socks. Sock knitting patterns are even more popular with boys than with girls, and it is no wonder why. For boys to get to the point of knitting their own socks, it is clear that the situation must be almost beyond hope. After all, everyone knows that few boys like to knit anything. Nonetheless, many of my best friends knit socks for men and wear handmade socks every day. You can bet they get compliments on them too! Even men who would never admit to such a thing admire their colorful footwear. Although they may be publicly mocked, you can bet that these sock pioneers are secretly admired by people who wish that they had the courage to make their own interesting clothing.
